EPA’s First CiteScore Ranks High!

EPA is happy to announce its inclusion into the Scopus database. We have received our first CiteScore for 2018 of 1.23, ranking us in the top half of the Public Administration field. Special thank goes to all authors, reviewers, board members, and the support of both the PSO and Wiley in establishing this journal in the field of policy studies. We are working hard to further improve both quality and visibility of this journal and will try to become included in more indices like the Web of Science as soon as possible. If you are interested in more details, you can view our most recent results provided by Scopus: scopus.com/sourceid/21100886407.

EPA Promotion on Various Conferences

Wiley and the editorial team of EPA were present at various conferences this year to promote the journal as well as establish and continue contact to authors, reviewers, and readership. Nils C. Bandelow, Fritz Sager, and Johanna Hornung attended in different constellations the ICPP in Montréal, the APSA annual meeting in Washington D.C., and the ECPR in Wroclaw. As members of the EPA editorial team, they distributed flyers in panels fitting the journal’s content and to scholars interested in the journal. In actively approaching potential contributors, they were able to make face-to-face contact and give insightful information on the journal’s processes.

Off the APSA annual meeting, Nils C. Bandelow, Fritz Sager, and Johanna Hornung attended the regular meeting of the Policy Studies Organization (PSO) that brings together representatives from all journals published under the aegis of the PSO and in cooperation with Wiley. This presented a great occasion to talk about common challenges and opportunities of all journals and to help each other and give advice on editorial processes and policy. For EPA, the most important prospect is to be included in further citation indices and rankings, whereas its current CiteScore of 1.23 (2018) in SCOPUS is a large step in that direction. Thanks for this very generous great organization and support to both Wiley (particularly Brian Giblin) and the PSO (particularly Paul Rich and Daniel Gutierrez-Sandoval), without which EPA would not be where it is today.

Best Paper Award 2018

On the basis of scientific quality, advancement of the field, scholarly reception, and excellence in content, structure, and insights, the EPA editors yearly honor the best paper published in EPA in the previous volume. As a reward, the best paper is free access for the period of one year. In doing so, the EPA editorial team takes the opportunity to thank EPA authors for their great work and valuable contributions to the EPA journal.

In 2018, the paper "Policy Dynamics and Types of Agency: From Individual to Collective Patterns of Action" by Capano and Galanti convinced the EPA editorial team as the scientifically most excellent and the strongest contribution to the advancement of our field. The authors identify collective patterns of action with the aim of better analyzing the interplay between structures or institutions and agents. Brokerage, entrepreneurship, and leadership appear to be ubiquitously important in the policy process. By putting more emphasis on collective patterns, the authors advance the pure individualistic understanding of actions by embedding action patterns in a more structural, holistic environment.

ECPR Conference

This year’s ECPR general conference in Hamburg was a great success for EPA. Nils Bandelow presented the journal at the roundtable on “Disseminating the Knowledge of the Policy Process Research“. Together with editors from other established or newly emerging journals, Nils Bandelow answered questions on the challenges and opportunities of journal management, and advised potential authors on how to get published.

Apart from the official EPA presentation, Wiley again organized an advertisement stand in the exhibition tent. General editors Nils Bandelow and Fritz Sager, as well as editorial director Johanna Hornung and friend-of-EPA Eva Thomann exchanged opinions on a diversity strategy for EPA with Wiley representatives. When

attending conference panels, the EPA editorial team managed to attract possible authors and papers to submit their high-quality work to EPA. With an evermore expanding international support for the journal, EPA moves on to become one of the most important journals in policy analysis.

EPA and Publons cherish review activity

From now on, EPA participates in the existing partnership between Wiley and Publons. Publons monitors individual reviewer activity already for a number of Wiley journals. Reviews occupy a very important role in keeping high the quality of published journal articles. But while reviewing is a particularly valuable activity and while every scholar appreciates constructive reviews that improve their own work, recognition for review activity is often hindered by the principle of anonymity. Publons overcomes this challenge by allowing for the creation of individual reviewer profiles to which review activity is added without revealing the subject that has been reviewed. EPA appreciates this way of cherishing reviewers’ activity and saying thank you to every scholar contributing to our journal by reviewing submissions. Therefore, Publons is now integrated into our ScholarOne system to automatically enable tracking of review activity. Of course, this service is purely voluntary for reviewers.

HAPPY  NEW YEAR!
